NORTH and SOUTH KOREA: Tensions have been high since the sinking of a South Korean warship in March. An international investigation identified the cause as a North Korean torpedo, which has been strongly denied by Pyongyang and tensions have been high ever since. The United States and South Korea are engaging in military exercises and North Korea has threatened retaliation and the use of its ‘nuclear deterrent’. The US has announced new sanctions on North Korea and China has criticised actions which increase regional tensions.
